About Our Pack
Se the About Pack 1 page for general information about the pack, dens, meetings, and the like.
Parent Involvement
Every adult is expected to contribute to the running of the pack by choosing a position. If you haven’t signed up for a position yet, please review the Adult Role Descriptions document and contact Keith, our Committee Chair, with your choice.
Scout Participation
We encourage sons and their families to view Scouting as a commitment. While occasional absences can be worked around, the scouting program does not lend itself to frequent nonattendance.
Drop-Off Policy
- If your son is in the Wolf, Bear, or either of the Webelos dens, you may choose to drop-off your son for den meetings.
- Parents of Tiger Cubs (first grade) must remain at meetings with their son; drop-offs are not permitted.
- For Pack Meetings, we encourage parents to stay as this is where your son will receive awards, announcements will be made, etc.
- Please respect your den leader’s wishes. If s/he asks you to stay for a meeting, please plan accordingly.
Absences/Leaving the Pack
Please contact your son’s den leader if you know he will be absent for a meeting/outing/etc. (Knowing that someone will not be at a meeting helps leaders plan accordingly, start their meeting on time, etc.) There is no pressure to stay in the pack if your son feels it is not for him. If your son does want to leave the pack, please contact your den leader as soon as possible.
Outing Policy
Sometimes the pack will cover all or a portion of the cost for an outing, event, or campout. If a scout (or family) signs up to attend and does not, the family is responsible for reimbursing the pack.
Cancellation Policy and Procedure
Our pack follows the Acton Boxborough Public Schools calendar. If the schools are off due to holidays or inclement weather, our pack will not meet.
If a pack meeting or outing is canceled unexpectedly, your son’s den leader will contact you.
Fees and Dues
Dues are for the calendar year and are collected in December. For Scouts who join in the fall or other times mid-year, the dues are prorated to cover until the start of the next calendar year (see your Den leader). The dues for the 2011-2012 year are:
Tiger, Wolf, Bear Den Scouts: $48.00
Webelos 1 and 2 Den Scouts: $60.00
We have coordinated with the other Packs in Acton to ensure that dues are uniform across all the Packs.
Webelos Scouts have higher dues because of the extra expense associated with their achievement pins and Blue & Gold Dinner event.
Your payment must be in form of a check made payable to “Acton Pack 1″. Please write your Scout’s name(s) in the memo section of the check.
You can either bring you payment to the December Pack meeting, give it to your Den Leader if you are unable to attend the next Pack meeting, or mail it to our Pack Treasurer.
What to Buy
Each scout and his family will need to provide/purchase the following:
- Uniform. This includes (at minimum) the scouting shirt (either blue or khaki depending on rank), the appropriate patches (Nashua Valley Council patch, Pack 1 numeral, Den patch, etc.), neckerchief, neckerchief slide and hat. You may optionally purchase the following: belt/bucket (great for displaying belt-loops earned!), pants, socks, etc. See the Pack 1 Uniform Shopping List. Also, see the uniform policy below.
- Rank-Level Handbook
- You may purchase the above at the places listed in the Uniform Shopping List page, including the Maynard Outdoor Store, the Scout Shop at the Council office in Lancaster and on-line.
- We have a uniform/book recycling program. Contact the current Uniform Recycler listed in the position table above if you want to obtain or pass along items.
The pack provides the following:
- All rank badges and awards, including belt loops
- Materials for projects and activities, unless otherwise noted
- Food and drinks for campouts
- Planning of all activities and outings
- A Pack 1 t-shirt when your Cub joins
Behavior Policy
The following are not permitted during pack meetings or on pack outings:
- Disrespect, in either words or actions, towards pack leaders, scouts, or parents.
- Running/horseplay and yelling/shouting during inappropriate times.
If a leader has to speak to a scout repeatedly about his behavior, parents may be asked to remain on-site during meetings. If the behavior continues, the scout may be asked to leave the pack.
Uniform Policy
Scouts are expected to wear their Class A* uniforms to all Pack meetings, events, and award ceremonies (unless otherwise noted).
Scouts are expected to wear their Class B** uniform (or higher) to all den meetings and nature outings (unless otherwise noted).
* The Class A uniform is comprised of the scout shirt, including patches, plus the neckerchief with some sort of clasp. Scouts may optionally wear their scouting hats, belts, pants, etc. Scouts will wear their shirts buttoned up and tucked in. Pants or shorts will be free of rips, tears, frayed edges, etc. If hats are worn, they will be worn front and center.
** The Class B Uniform is a pack t-shirt. Pants or shorts must be free of rips, tears, frayed edges, etc. T-shirts are provided to new scouts when they join. Additional pack t-shirts can be purchased for $6 per shirt. See the Cubmaster or Assistant Cubmaster at a pack meeting to obtain a shirt.
Scout Attendance Award
At the end of the year, the den with the highest attendance at den meetings, pack meetings and pack events (on a percentage basis) will be rewarded with a $100 gift card to Kimball Farm for an ice cream party!
Summer Camp
Summer camp is a very good experience for scouts but it is a larger time and financial commitment. The camps are run as day camps Monday -Friday. Scouts can attend for 1 week or multiple weeks. The experience includes swimming instruction and fun, BB gun and archery safety and shooting, nature study, fishing, boating, crafts etc. Your scout will never forget his first “bulls eye”. Note that in addition to being a very well run camp experience, the cost of scout camp tends to be less than other summer camps. The pack makes every attempt to keep scouting affordable. Confidential financial assistance is available from the pack for families that would otherwise be unable to participate. Please contact the Cubmaster or Pack Committee Chairman for more information.
You can learn more about the Cub Scout camp options:
- Camp Split Rock, in Ashburnham (bus pick-up/drop-off in Acton), run by our own Nashua Valley Council.
- Cub Adventure Day Camp, in Bolton (bus pick-up/drop-off in Acton) run by our neighboring Knox Trail Council.
