Details:
During the weekend Webelos will have an opportunity to:
- Earn an Activity Badge taught by professionals in the field and other experts,
- See Boy Scout troops doing scoutcraft and visit their camps
- Cook their own supper and spend a night outside
- Have fun and get a taste of Boy Scout camp.
Webelos and their families arrive between 8 and 10 on Saturday morning. As they arrive, there will be demonstrations of Scouting activities going on with Boy Scouts who will be glad to answer any questions the boys or parents have. During this time families set up at their assigned campsites.
Families supply their own bag lunches for Saturday. After lunch they will be go to their Activity Badge class. Parents are welcome to quietly sit in on classes or join in a cracker barrel at the dining hall where they can learn more about the Order of the Arrow, Venturing, High Adventure bases, and the other things awaiting their sons in Boy Scouting.
The fee for the weekend includes one parent/scout pair. This covers a patch for the scout, breakfast and activity pin class supplies as well as other activity supplies. T-shirts may be preordered and will be available when scouts arrive.
Because cooking outdoors is such a big part of camping families will be cooking supper outside. For those without a lot of experience or equipment, you can bring food and a roll of aluminum foil. Some basic outdoor recipes will be provided. We’ll teach you how to eat well outside. There is water available in each campsite. The evening will finish off with an entertaining campfire program and other evening activities before sending you to bed.
Please be aware that temperatures can dip to freezing at this time of year. Having a sleeping bag rated at 30 degrees or better is preferred although a 40 degree bag and a little extra clothing should work just as well. And also be aware that no scout will be allowed to sleep in a tent with an adult who is not his parent/legal guardian. It is expected that any boy who wishes will be able to earn the Outdoorsman activity pin on this weekend, although we have no program for it.
You’ll wake Sunday morning refreshed, be fed a hot and hearty breakfast, get some time to pack up and then, our farewell ceremony. Awards and event patches will be given out and everyone should be off by noon, although 11 has been the typical end time.
Pre-registration by the deadline, earlier if possible, is required and helps greatly with planning, buying breakfast food and activity badge supplies, as well as assigning campsites. Registering as a den or pack will help ensure all scouts and their respective families from the same unit will be put in the same campsite.
The boys can earn one of the following activity pins:
I’ve spent a week at Camp Wanocksett each summer for the last 4 years with Troop 284 and I’ve been to Webelos Woods before with my older son Eric. I’m also co-teaching the Engineer Activity pin this year. The kids will have a blast, rain or shine. I highly recommend going. It’s a great introduction to Boy Scout camp, for both scouts and parents.
